In a previous second piece on the North Korean nervous crisis, I explained at length to my readers how China had always been involved in the very existence of Korea, north, South or unified.

It so happens that I was confirmed both in holding that position but also in the belief that it would soon see the Celestial Empire find it difficult to support its ally’s views because these were not in synchronization with the now and here real world that I often define as The State of Things.

When Pyongyang menaced of warring with the USA, their cousins to the South and pretty much anyone that wanted in, Beijing doubled on having accepted UN sanctions by sending troops to the border.
When Pyongyang went as far as to say that they could not guarantee the safety of foreigners on their soil, not even that of diplomatic missions’ personnel, China said something interesting :

That it would :
“… safeguard the legitimate rights and safety of its citizens and business in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).”

Now the Chinese are both patient and ready to act as their neighbors have noticed by now but they are also very interested in a world economy that is making them rich. For all their growing military arsenal, they are not yet truly willing to go to war and especially not very far away from home. But the above expression is that of one who thinks that statement such as :
“Last weekend, the DPRK … threatened to launch a preemptive nuclear strike as self-defense.” are really not necessary. Preemptive self-defense? Weally? How cute!
In fact, one could argue that the Chinese answer to take care of the security itself is both akin to neo-colonialism if looked at from a traditional Euro perspective and to International Community supported action if it comes to include safety of other/all foreign Nationals and become so very UN style. France has been doing so in Africa for decades!

To this effect, Xi Jinping made a declaration Sunday that fits in very nicely the framework of his prior call to UN secretary :

4 April 2013  Ban Ki-moon called on all parties concerned to help calm the situation.

Xi warns against chaos in region

No country should be allowed to damage world peace or throw a region into chaos for selfish gains, President Xi Jinping said on Sunday.

“Countries – big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor – should all contribute their share in maintaining and enhancing peace,” Xi said at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2013, which attracted more than 2,500 political and economic leaders from around the globe.

China also lent its backing to recent United Nations Security Council sanctions following a nuclear test conducted by the North, which is, however, viewed by Beijing as a crucial strategic buffer against the U.S. and its allies in the region.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday told United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in a telephone conversation Beijing would “not allow troublemaking at the doorsteps of China”.

So, for the same reason that brought the US to cancel a missile test last week ( not so bad as America already runs more than enough of those and it was, besides, just the missile being tested not the warheads, mind you! ), China would like Kim Jong-Un to relax, to calm down. Because insecurity is bad for business. Not only did I know that and told you first but by now, even India has noticed 😎
