For those that had not made the connection, Avril as in Lavigne is the same in French as April the month. So logically she released a new video a few days ago. Well it may be her namesake month but critics didn’t see it as a reason for celebration. That Hello Kitty video was showered with bad reviews.

They criticized the music of course, the dance moves, the theme, the costumes and some went as far as deeming her offering racist. Honestly, each of these remarks has some basis and yet, I think it is unfair to make too big a case against poor Avril for it. Check :

See what I mean? It’s not outrageous unless you consider dull outrageous but by that point of view, most pop music videos ( let’s not kid ourselves, Avril is no rocker, pop all the way ) are outrageous. Just do as I do and don’t listen to / view them? I mean seriously, the title bears the moniker of one of the blandest fads we’ve witnessed in the last decade : WTF did you expect? The poor girl is no Miley which is a good thing on the one hand and would have been a source of reproach had it been the case. Besides, if you want to listen to electro-pop-rock videos on a Japanese background / theme, there are much better offerings musically, true but these are not for Avril’s youngish public and although not as dull would raise criticism too; check :

See what I mean? I prefer Robyn personally but only because slender blonde for slender blonde, I’ll go for the slightly better music and funniest clip? What should be noted though is that it also uses the Japanese clip culture as a background. In that respect, which is worse? Maybe neither. Heck, before blaming such copies one should have the honesty to weigh in the original, right? Let us delineate the rules then : young woman singer-artist, candy colored theme production and dubious offering on the moral side. I have exactly that for you people for comparison purposes but be warned, it might be a bit shocking :

So what’s so wrong about poor Avril’s video now? Dull, sure but most parents would probably rather their kids listen to it than the other two? As for music, may I simply recommend that you shun videos altogether when trying to find the best sound? It really superfluous anyway?

Wink out, Tay
